In 2008, Science Club was privileged to have a special talk by Dr. Tracey Rogers from University of New South Wales. Dr. Rogers is Castle Cove Public School's assigned Scientist and is an internationally recognised authority on leopard seals in Antarctica. Tracey also happens to now be a Castle Cove parent with Lily in Kindergarten this year (2009).
Following from Dr. Rogers interesting and stimulating presentation on leopard seals, Antarctica and climate change, Science Club organised a Jobs For Seals campaign to raise funds towards her research project. The children raised money by doing jobs for their families. We also got to pick a name for one of the leopard seals tagged by Dr. Rogers' team in Antarctica, and sent along a toy seal as a representative of Milo, the Castle Cove seal.
Dr. Rogers came back in Term 2, 2009 to speak at a special assembly for the whole school where she showed us photographs of Milo in Antarctica and updated us on the research.
